Chowderluff, victorious, rode through the shaky descent through atmosphere and braking to a soft touchdown somewhere on the surface of the planet. He'd come home again.

He loosened his safety straps, and shoved the door open, so that he could take his first deep breath of the air of Antigone in more than a week.

The sky was lightly frosted with a high pattern of ribbed clouds; the horizon was near, and darkened to the east with a low band of distant stormclouds. The air was bright and clear, although slightly heavy. He stepped out, relishing the feel of ploughed, turned earth under his bare feet. He'd landed in the midst of a food-farm.

He breathed deeply, deeply of the air, growing almost giddy with the joyous taste of freedom. He turned around to look at the spent ejection tube.

There were a few others standing about, also watching: an old Shelliv farmer, his face whitened with age; his wife, stout and strong and disapproving; and their two daughters, bright and beautiful young damsels with deep black eyes, sharp ears, white teeth, and trim, smooth lines in shoulder and thigh.

Chowderluff remembered, just then, that he was, in fact, still quite naked.
